The Napoleonic Poles at Waterloo and in Etterbeek-Brussels Brussels, June 21st, 2015
They are members of several groups engaged in historical reenactment, led by Colonel Waldemar Zubek. Some of them are parliamentarians, museum curators and senior officials from ministries in Poland. And so, in the context of the Battle of Waterloo reenactment, in addition to the light cavalry of the Imperial Guard, a "regiment" of 140 Poles in period uniforms (Duchy of Warsaw – Napoleonic camp) could plant their tents in the French camp and fight under the French High Command on Friday 19 and Saturday, June 20, 2015. The next day, a detachment of the Polish Regiment (about 65 people with canteen women), in period uniforms, visited Brussels with a cannon, to perform a parade in the streets of Etterbeek. The Polish detachment was commanded by Colonel Waldemar Zubek (linguist-translator) attended by the Artillery Captain Wojciech Borkowski (Doctor of Archaeology, Deputy Director of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw) and Warrant Officer-of Uhlans Dariusz Nawrot (Doctor of History, Professor of History at the University of Silesia in Katowice). In front of the Town hall of Etterbeek, the Alderman Frank Van Bockstal, representing the Mayor Vincent De Wolf, and the Aldermen Aziz Es and Jean Laurent, with Bernard de Marcken de Merken, City Councilor, welcome the detachment of the Polish Regiment. Colonel Waldemar Zubek makes the Polish-Napoleonic military salutes to the City authorities of Etterbeek and delivers a message of friendship and fraternity between Poland and Belgium. Before continuing the parade to the Royal Museum of Army and Military History, in the rhythm of the drums, for a visit that is dear to him, the whole delegation was invited, by the Alderman Frank Van Bockstal, to a beautiful reception where they were offered the glass of friendship. Fundacja Polonia International presents its thanks to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, to the Administration and to the Police of the Municipality of Etterbeek for their kind assistance in the realization of this wonderful event of Belgo-Polish friendship within the European Union. |

I ASK FOR A MINUTE OF SILENCE
I ask for a minute of silence
For those who forever remained in Warsaw,
Who rested in God, in Earth and in Glory
For the Capital’s inhabitants, for the Underground’s soldiers
I ask for a minute of silence, a moment of stillness.
I ask for a minute of silence
For the experienced old hands
And for the newly initiated ones,
For volunteers,
For infantry men, sappers, aviators,
For hurried Ulans.
For retired old gentlemen,
For gangly adolescents, and for strapping lads.
For those from the forest,
From the Resistance,
From AK and other formations.
For the superhumanly brave heroes.
For priests, artists, scientists, thinkers.
And for those unimportant ones,
Those overshadowed.
For the God-fearing ones who just wanted
To live peacefully
From day to day
Not taking part in any war
And who had to take part in one, despite it.
For the famous ones
And for those without a name
I ask for a minute of silence.
I ask for a minute of silence.
For those beings protected by chivalric laws:
Widows and orphans.
For children, for mothers.
For wives, sisters, and for old aunts.
For young maidens and airy chatterboxes,
For medics, nurses and doctors,
For messengers, guards, cooks,
For maids
For cleaners
For the one who at her own asking,
with general consent,
served a cake baked in a communal cellar
to the hungry from the street,
A common cake,
As there was nothing left that she owned.
For all those never appreciated enough
I ask for a minute of silence.
I ask for a minute of silence
For creatures
About whom one thinks less
Who one remembers less
For whom a reasonable heart aches less,
For faithful comrades in good and bad times,
For dogs and cats. And horses. For animals.
And for the centuries charmed in stones,
For museums, theatres, for schools,
For churches,
For flaming libraries,
For documents and mementos,
For Warsaw’s pictoresque corners.
For palatial halls,
For their interiors and riches,
For apartments, studios, and workshops.
For the heritage of generations. For familial possessions,
For priceless rubble.
For first hopes,
For changing courses of the battle,
For despair of the memory:
- That as long as we live…
And that despite it all …-
For the time of immeasurable loneliness.
For the song from burning backyards:
- Lord, don’t leave us ! -
For the Warsaw Uprising
I ask for a minute of silence.
